Designing Integrated ELL Lessons and Empowering Adult Learners: A Comprehensive Approach to Curriculum, Digital Literacy, Workplace, Civics, and Test-Taking Skills Integration

This interactive three-hour workshop equips ELL educators to build coherent, level?appropriate lessons that embed Digital Literacy, Workplace readiness, Civics, and test?taking strategies into the core language domains. Grounded in JCAE's curriculum structure — Reading, Speaking & Listening, Language, Writing, Civics & Citizenship, Workplace Skills, and Digital Literacy — and aligned to ELP/CCR standards and TABE expectations, the session blends short demos with hands?on lesson design so participants leave with ready?to?teach materials. We'll begin with a practical tour of the initial curriculum planning cycle and level?specific objectives, then model how to "thread" digital and workplace competencies through communicative tasks. Participants will practice embedding civics content into multi-modal lessons and will co-create test-taking routines that reflect TABE's emphasis on Reading and Listening while preserving communicative, culturally responsive andragogy.

AI for Adult Educators: Instructional Tools, Integration Models, and Future Pathways

The afternoon session shifts from learner readiness to instructional design and implementation - illustrating how AI can expand teaching capacity, strengthen learning outcomes, and prepare students for future employment. Participants will examine a range of classroom-ready tools and integration models appropriate for adult education, ESL, and workforce-focused environments. Topics include personalization, scaffolded instruction, collaborative learning, gamification, formative feedback, and the role of AI in contextualized language and career instruction. The session also explores equity considerations, practical guardrails, and program policies that help instructors reinforce AI as a support —not a shortcut — for language acquisition, academic skill-building, and workplace readiness. Through demonstrations, scenarios, and discussion, attendees will gain strategies for adopting AI responsibly within their existing instructional workflows and digital ecosystems. The session concludes with a forward-looking discussion on how AI will continue to influence adult education, workforce development, and employer expectations — providing educators with tools, resources, and confidence to guide learners through an increasingly AI-enabled world. NOTE: both morning and afternoon are standalone sessions, so attendees could select just one, or attendees can join both for even more information

AI for Adult Learners: Skills, Literacy, and Responsible Use

The morning session focuses on building adult learner readiness for artificial intelligence - emphasizing use, judgment, and responsible participation in a rapidly changing workforce. Participants will explore how AI can serve as a practical learning and employment tool while addressing prompting, verification, bias, ethical guidelines, and program guardrails. The session then examines how AI can deepen digital literacy and enhance instructional engagement through personalization, immediate feedback, and contextualized workplace tasks. Drawing on current research and field-tested strategies, participants will review instructional examples across ESL, HSE, writing, math, and job search preparation. Special attention is given to the unique opportunities and challenges faced by adult learners who are developing foundational digital and language skills, including those learning English. By the end of the morning, attendees will have a clearer understanding of how to introduce AI to learners safely and effectively, support judgment-based use, and align instruction with both policy expectations and workforce realities. NOTE: both morning and afternoon are standalone sessions, so attendees could select just one, or attendees can join both for even more information

This curriculum has been cross walked with the CCRS and is curated by Texas State University. It is without cost to use.

Human to Human: The Transformative Power of Empathy in Adult Education

Human to Human: The Transformative Power of Empathy in Adult Education Adult learners enter our classrooms carrying a lifetime of experiences that shape how they view education, authority, risk, and their own potential. Because life experience is universal, empathy becomes one of the most powerful—and underutilized—tools available to adult educators. This session explores how intentional, human-centered practices can transform instructional relationships and improve learner engagement, persistence, and outcomes. Participants will examine the critical role of context in adult learning, recognizing that each learner’s background, worldview, and prior educational experiences influence how they show up in the classroom. The session emphasizes cultivating curiosity about learners’ stories—not to lower expectations, but to more effectively support forward progress by aligning instruction with lived realities. The presentation also addresses the importance of self-awareness, including recognizing personal biases and holding assumptions loosely so that each learner is honored as a uniquely human individual. Emotional intelligence (EQ) is presented as a practical framework for building meaningful connections, managing classroom dynamics, and responding wisely to challenges common in adult education settings. Finally, the session highlights consistency as a cornerstone of trust-building—showing up reliably, maintaining appropriate boundaries, and modeling lifelong learning beyond academic content. Participants will leave with concrete strategies to apply empathy intentionally, relate more effectively to adult learners, and foster educational environments where dignity, growth, and persistence are central.

Empowering Adult ELL programs through Effective Data Organization

Adult English Language Learners bring diverse backgrounds, goals, and learning needs to the classroom. To effectively meet these needs, ELL programs should implement a well-organized system for collecting, managing and using data. This session will demonstrate how to use everyday software to create structured data that empowers teachers, enhances communications, ensures fair and efficient use of resources, helps with decision making, all while complying with grant, program and college regulations. The presentation covers data collection from the first interaction with the learner to program completion and how it helps the teachers help the learner reach their goal. Participants will learn how our program uses simple accessible tools – such as Microsoft and Google platforms- to collect, store and share data, without having the expense of a customized paid platform. These tools work together to support technology integration, facilitate class scheduling and provide timely updates through weekly newsletters and teaching tips. This session will include real examples of how organized data helps instructors access premade instructional materials, ensure consistency in lesson delivery and collaborate more effectively. Attendees will also see how a simple spreadsheet is used not only to maintain student records or support roster creation but is used to make informed decisions and verify state required data. Instructors, administrators, program coordinators looking to improve their current data system will leave with practical strategies and tools that enhance instruction and facilitate operations that support the success of English Language Learners.
